The unexpected city arcade | Capitol Square

9-02-22

Haymarket

Have you ever missed those retro pastel arcades, filled with claws machines and fighter games? Well this city arcade may be the spot for you! Only a 10 minute walk from central station it’s the place to provide you with child-like thrills and refreshment in the sunlit playground.

I want you to imagine this. You’ve just exited central station, greeted by the most gorgeous blue sky. You have a few hours to kill before your next class so you decide to explore around central station. Through rows of trees, and past the oncoming light rail you approach the capitol theatre as the noise of multiple crossings fills the area.

Curious about the building next to the capitol theatre you enter the capitol street square. As you enter you are greeted by a bunch of restaurants, some open some closed, followed by two large escalotors leading to the next floor. This next floor is where the magic begins.

This was my experience of stumbling across this hidden city arcade. Full of pastel and sunlight, this city arcade is a breath of fresh air, filled with claw machines, plushies and other retro games on every side.

The capitol square building is a really interesting place to discover and explore because it’s where small business, restaurants and entertainment all collide together to make an unexpected shopping area – within one block!

Not to mention the glass roof makes the city arcade super pleasant to be in, contrasting with your typical dark, neon lit timezone.

If you want a treat whilst you explore or someone to rest for a bit, there is a starbucks downstairs with two floors and a nice outdoor area.

Do keep in mind that to use the various machines in the city arcade, you will need to pay around $20 for credit if you only bring card.

For me this find is one of the closest to my heart because I remember the joy and the enthusiasm I had in discovering this area!

I have yet to try food in the area (lockdown sadly) but will keep you updated on my opinion on the local restaurant – stay tuned.

As always, keep exploring, keep learning and be kind,

Miranda
